ATC SCM12 Pro compact, high-performance, passive 2-way nearfield studio monitors

ATC SCM12 Pro compact, high-performance, passive 2-way nearfield studio monitors (pair); immaculate, boxed as new, with ATC carry bags & user manual. Here's a product description.

Though the SCM12 Pro is the most affordable model in ATCs professional range of loudspeakers, the monitor makes use of the companys celebrated drive units for both the mid/bass and tweeter, both being meticulously hand built at its UK facility. The tweeter is a 25mm/one-inch soft-dome designed around ATCs unique dual-suspension technology. Unlike conventional tweeters, this precision part employs two suspensions, offering far greater control of the voice coil and dome motion especially at higher sound pressure levels.

The result is an extended high-frequency response with much greater clarity and definition due to the reduction in disturbing anharmonic distortion. Listener fatigue is also greatly reduced, resulting in users being able to work for longer periods with greater accuracy. At the lower end of the frequency spectrum, mid/bass reproduction is handled by ATCs 150mm/six-inch proprietary CLD drive unit. Using a 45mm/1.75-inch diameter voice coil, and employing an FEA (Finite Element Analysis) optimised high-energy symmetric gap motor system, the driver is capable of tremendous dynamic range with minimal power compression. Cone construction is courtesy of another proprietary ATC technology that represents another advance in driver performance namely, Constrained Layer Damping (CLD), a process that uses multiple laminated fabric cones to form a stiff, light, and tremendously well-damped structure. Speaking acoustically, this construction creates a smoother on- and off-axis frequency response and also a reduction in distortion leading to a more lifelike reproduction of source material. Meaningfully, judgements and decisions can be made more quickly, more accurately, and for longer periods of time by busy working audio professionals. Put it another way: by employing exceptional drive units, the passive crossover can, by design, use the minimum number of components in a simple, second-order implementation.

Indeed, the capacitors are all 250Vdc metalised polypropylene and all the inductors are air-cored types for minimal signal distortion. Additionally, all of the inductors are wound in house with very high-purity copper while large-gauge wire is used for the bass components to minimise signal losses. Simple, well-engineered products almost always trump feature-rich, cost-engineered alternatives, and ATCs SCM12 Pro has been duly designed with that philosophy very much intact. So now is the time to consider EQing, balancing, and editing faster, with more consistent results and reduced listening fatigue using the latest nearfield monitoring marvel from ATC.

Here's some product specs. Drivers: HF ATC 1/25mm dual suspension Soft Dome (SH25-76 6 Ohm) LF ATC 6/150mm Constrained Layer Damping (CLD) (SB50-150CLD 8 Ohm). Amplitude Linearity: 80Hz 16kHz (+/-2dB). Cut Off Frequencies: 56Hz 22kHz (-6dB freestanding).

Finding a path through all the conflicting constraints when designing a monitor is akin to making the pieces of a jigsaw fit together, and when you get it right, everything snaps into focus. The SCM12 Pro had that from the very start. It seems to me that monitors designed and engineered by people who live and breath electroacoustics have a signature. Its a signature of sound quality that hangs together from the moment you begin listening.

Theres no raising of eyebrows, or over-concentrated listening while you work out whats suddenly happened to the monitoring character you were previously familiar with. The foundation of the SCM12 Pro is its low-frequency performance: typically closed-box with its lack of overhang and reassuring security of pitch, whatever the volume level, but with the added quality that comes from driver engineering thats a level or two above run-of-the-mill and can play surprisingly loud.

The SCM12 Pro leaves no room for uncertainty in its reproduction of kick drums and bass guitar. Furthermore, the relatively limited low-frequency cutoff (-3dB around 70Hz) is made less significant by the slow roll-off thereafter, meaning that at 35Hz the SCM12 Pro is only 12dB down. Theres absolutely no sense that low-frequency bandwidth is significantly restricted by the lack of a reflex port. But its not just at the bass end where the SCM12 Pro excels.

It has a natural, uncoloured, hear-through mid-range quality and unforced detail in the way it presents high-frequency information, which means audio is reproduced with the minimum of speaker artifacts imprinted upon it. Stereo imaging was well focussed with good depth, and there were no embellishments or attention-drawing emphases anywhere, just accuracy and consistency. Its exactly whats needed from a mix tool. As you can probably tell, I really like the SCM12 Pro. I think its a genuinely fine nearfield monitor, and given the relatively low price for the level of engineering involved, it is something of a bargain.
